Bad luck for Jessica Watson.

I reported earlier about Australian Jessica Watson. She is aiming to break the record to be the youngest person sailing around the world alone, non-stop, and unassisted.

On her first night disaster struck, and her vessel Pink Lady collided with the Chinese bulk carrier m/v ‘Silver Yang’. Luckily she is unhurt and made it safely to port. Read all about in on Sea-Fever.

And more coverage here, in the Brisbane Times. The Chinese captain apparently did not stop to give any assistance, and later turned his vessel’s AIS transmitter off. AIS stands for Automated Identification System.  Most large commercial vessels are now required to operate an AIS transmitter, which works similar to the identification system used on most aircraft.

The case is now under investigation. My best wishes are with Jessica and her parents. I hope it all works out.
